Managing College
Cheating, in my life, has always been exemplified as a word that describes something that is un-loyal, is degrading, and should never be done. I felt differently toward it, and this article has gotten the same view as I myself do. In no way am I saying that cheating should be done and abused, but what I am saying is that if one doesn't understand the material distributed to them, there should be something in the students power to do in order to understand it. Cheating is a term that when used correctly, can describe how a student can get away without doing their own work merely because they forgot to or had no initiative to do it and decided it easier to just take the work of someone else and use that instead. But if you look at it in the form of where a student might not understand the subject and asks another student who does for assisstance in undersatanding of the subject doing the work together, that shouldn't be penalized. If a student needs help from someone who is taking the same class that understands the subject, it should be taken advantage of the situation and use the resources you have.

I agree that when a student doesn't understand something in school and asks for the assistance of another student on homework should not be considered cheating. Sometimes, your classmates may know the material in a way that helps you retain it better. Good job!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think that when a student needs help, the most sensible thing is to go to a teacher first and get help. If the teacher is still explaining it in a way that doesn't make sense and probably never will, atleast you tried, and now you can go on to another student. I'm not sure if you're saying its ok to ask for help on a major project or test though? Calling for help on homework is fine or how to understand how to do something. However, I think once you start losing originality and using another person's answers, that's when it can become cheating, no matter what the assignment.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your view on "cheating" but I also believe you should only go to another student for help if the teacher says it is ok. Most teachers don't have a problem with students collaborating on mere homework assignments and would prefer it that way, but sometimes a teacher may specifically say to work alone and they most likely have a purpose for this. If you still don't understand something you're supposed to work alone on go to the teacher for help instead of working against the rules.
